When we booked our trip to Bulgaria, it was honestly a spontaneous decision. We chose it simply because it was one of the few European countries neither of us had visited yet. I have to admit that we didn’t have very high expectations. The only things we had really heard about were Sofia and its beautiful churches.
Since we were traveling in January, we wanted to combine a city break with a winter escape. After spending two nights in Sofia, we decided to head into the mountains in search of snow and that’s how we chose Bansko.
Let me tell you: it was the best decision we could have made.
From Sofia to Bansko – The Journey Into the Mountains
Bansko sits at the foot of the Pirin Mountains, in southern Bulgaria. The transfer from Sofia takes around four hours by bus or car, and the route itself is part of the experience. The landscape gradually shifts from urban streets to rolling hills and dramatic mountain peaks, giving you a taste of the scenery before you even arrive.
When we stepped off the bus, the first thing we noticed was the crisp mountain air. Snow-dusted rooftops, the peaks rising in the background and the quiet hum of a small town made it immediately clear this wasn’t just another ski resort.

Bansko: Cozy, Lively & Full of Winter Magic
What surprised us most about Bansko was its atmosphere. It’s a small town, yes, but in winter it feels alive without being overwhelming. After a day on the slopes, people fill the streets in snow boots and puffer jackets, moving between bars and traditional taverns. Music spills onto the streets, fireplaces glow through the windows and everything feels warm and inviting despite the cold outside.
It’s a balance that’s hard to find in other mountain towns, it’s charming and traditional, yet energetic and welcoming.

What to do in Bansko
Whether you’re visiting for skiing, the scenery or just a winter escape, Bansko has a lot to offer. Here’s what we recommend:
1. Wander Through Bansko Old Town
One of my favorite things to do in Bansko was simply walking.
The Old Town is full of cobblestone streets, stone houses with wooden balconies, and little local shops. With the snowy Pirin Mountains in the background, it feels like a postcard.
Don’t miss the beautiful Holy Trinity Church in the center. The surrounding square is perfect for slow wandering, taking photos and just soaking in the mountain atmosphere.
My recommendation? Don’t rush. Bansko isn’t about ticking boxes, it’s about enjoying the vibe.

2. Ride the Bansko Gondola to the Pirin Mountains
If you’re wondering what to do in Bansko in winter, this is a must.
The Bansko Gondola Lift takes you straight up into the Pirin Mountains, where the ski slopes begin. Even if you’re not planning to ski all day, the ride itself is worth it for the views.
At the top, you’ll find ski slopes for all levels, mountain restaurants and panoramic views of the snow-covered peaks. We didn’t bring any equipment, but renting skis and clothes in town was easy and affordable. Many rental shops also offer lessons, so it’s a great destination even if you’re a beginner.

3. Go Skiing or Snowboarding (Even as a Beginner)
Bansko is Bulgaria’s top ski resort for a reason. Slopes are well-maintained, infrastructure is organized and prices are much lower than in the Alps. Beginner areas and instructors make it approachable if you’ve never skied before.
And honestly? Sitting at a mountain restaurant with a hot chocolate while looking at snow-covered peaks is an experience on its own.
4. Experience a Traditional Bulgarian Mehana
After a day in the snow, stepping into a mehana — a traditional tavern — is a must. Think wooden interiors, folk decorations, huge fireplaces, and lively atmosphere. Food is hearty and warming: try Shopska salad, banitsa, grilled kebapche, slow-cooked meats and finish with local wine or rakia.

5. Enjoy the Après-Ski & Nightlife
What surprised me most about Bansko was how lively it gets in the evening. Streets fill with people moving between bars, restaurants, and cafés. There’s something for everyone: relaxed wine bars, lively après-ski spots, cozy cocktail bars and restaurants with live music.
It has something for both couples looking for a romantic evening and groups wanting a fun night out.

6. Relax in a Spa After a Day in the Snow
Many hotels in Bansko offer spa facilities and I highly recommend booking one that does.
After walking all day or skiing, a sauna, steam bath or hot pool feels incredible. It adds that extra layer of relaxation to your winter trip.
Bansko is affordable compared to other European ski destinations, so you can often find beautiful spa hotels at very reasonable prices.
Where to Stay in Bansko
For the best experience:
- Stay near the gondola lift if skiing is your priority.
- Stay near the Old Town if you want atmosphere and easy access to restaurants, bars, and shops.
Most of the town is walkable, so either option works, but central locations make winter travel smoother.

Is Bansko Worth Visiting?
Absolutely.
If you’re looking for:
- A budget-friendly ski destination in Europe
- A cozy winter getaway
- A hidden gem in the Balkans
- Beautiful mountain scenery
- Traditional food and warm atmosphere
Then Bansko is 100% worth it.
We chose it randomly, without big expectations and it ended up being one of our favorite winter trips.
Sometimes the places you don’t overhype in your mind are the ones that surprise you the most.
And Bansko was exactly that for us!
